Treak Cliff Cavern - landscape model

Treak Cliff Cavern in Castleton, Derbyshire is famous throughout the world for its unique and large deposits of Blue John stone and some of the finest stalactites and stalagmites in the Peak District.

The tactile landscape model, installed in Spring 2018, features both the surface landscape and the sub-surface cave system. The design solution shows the cave system as a solid structure within a void in the landscape to give an understanding of the subterranean cave formation.

The scaled model landscape is fabricated in painted cast resin with embedded etched zinc symbols. The solid cavern structure is 3D printed from manipulated LIDAR data and the transparent ‘landscape’ cover made from clear acrylic. The plinth is made from treated oak and fitted with lockable adjustable feet.
